The Seiko 5 Sports SRPL91 “Gene Kranz” reveals two distinct personalities on warm Alcantara “Travertine” and ice-blue “It’s a Boy”.

Vintage charm in silver
With the “Gene Kranz” reissue SRPL91, Seiko brought back a fan favourite from the late 1960s in 2025. The nickname refers to NASA flight director Gene Kranz, who often wore the original while working on the Gemini and Apollo programmes.
The reissue retains many of the original’s features—and with them the unmistakable character of the golden age of sports watches. The SRPL91 has a clear vintage charm, thanks in no small part to its characteristic cushion-shaped case, domed mineral crystal and historic Seiko 5 emblem.
Alcantara “Travertine”: warm and nostalgic
The 20 mm Alcantara “Travertine” strap brings out precisely this character. The combination feels warm, soft and nostalgic. The colour and texture of Alcantara complement the Seiko’s design naturally.
Historically, the two are children of a similar era: while the original Seiko appeared in the late 1960s, Alcantara’s story began only a few years later.
Alcantara “It’s a Boy”: cool and modern
Change the strap and the character changes with it. The ice-blue 20 mm Alcantara “It’s a Boy” strap brings the same watch visually into the present. The nostalgic touch recedes slightly, making way for a cooler, more modern look.
The Seiko never entirely loses its vintage character, however. Alcantara’s soft, matte surface continues to create a beautiful contrast with the steel case. One lovely detail: on Saturdays, the ice blue is even echoed in the Seiko’s blue date display.
Comfort with no break-in period
What I liked immediately about the Alcantara straps was their comfort from the very first minute. There is no break-in period and no complicated construction that makes the strap unnecessarily stiff. It simply feels comfortable on the wrist straight away.
The buckle also shows close attention to detail: it is brushed on top and polished on the sides, just like many watch cases. On the Gene Kranz, it picks up the case’s contrasting finishes beautifully.
In the end, the same watch remains on the wrist—but with two distinct personalities: warm and nostalgic on Alcantara “Travertine”, cool and modern on Alcantara “It’s a Boy”.
